Community Update: Sunday, August 4, 2019

Sunday, August 4th, 2019

Dear Advanced Learning Academy Families,

Shortly after leaving our school-wide uniform swap at our Euclid campus yesterday, I and likely many in our community, learned of the tragic shooting in El Paso, Texas.  We also learned that the tragedy may have been motivated by hate and prejudice. We know that students within the ALA community may be in need of support as we return to school, and many will want to help the victims and families in El Paso.  Our counseling team, Tiffany Johnson (PK-3), Jose Sanchez (4th-7th), and Erik Sanchez (8th-12th), will be available to students and families and over the next few weeks, in collaboration with students, design an ALA response. Our school and our community is a safe space for all as we process and fight against hate and prejudice. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our counseling team should your child need support and assistance.

We are looking forward to welcoming the entire ALA community back to school at several events this week.  On Tuesday, August 6th, 2019,  ALA at FT (4th-12th) will host a Back to School & Potluck Event from 3:30-7:00 pm. Grade-level informational sessions will be held at 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm in various locations depending on your child’s grade-level. The sessions are identical, so families only need to attend one. Immediately following the event, we will hold a 7 pm meeting for the parents/guardians of 7th and 8th graders interested in participating in any of the 19-20 Academy Athletic League sports: Girls Volleyball, Boys 7 on 7 Touch Football, Boys & Girls Basketball Boys & Girls Soccer, or Boys & Girls Cross Country. The Academy Athletic League meeting will begin at 7pm in the ALA FT cafeteria. Two days later, on Thursday, August 8th, 2018,  ALA at Euclid (PK-3) will host a Back to School & Potluck Event from 4:30-6:00 pm. We are pleased to share that we have deepened our multi-age experiences, a key ALA design feature, at our Euclid campus by banding K/1 and 2/3 classrooms this year. Our multi-age classrooms will further build community and relationships among teachers and students. Please look for posted signs in the Euclid cafeteria helping to direct you as you arrive. We are seeking volunteers to help us cook at both Euclid and ALA FT Back to School Events. Please reach out to Veronica Orta, if you are able to volunteer. Finally, also on Thursday, August 8th, from 5:30-6:30pm in the theatre, our ALA theatre department will host an information session on the important theatre  events for the 2019-2020 school year.  This session is for all students interested in participating theatre, enrolled, or not, in theatre classes, and interested in the upcoming auditions this theatre season.

We are pleased to share that we are adding an additional Passion Pursuit class to the ALA FT campus. Passion Pursuit classes take place from 7:30am-8:15am Monday through Friday.  All 6th and 7th grade students have the choice to sign up for band or mariachi Passion Pursuit.  Our newest class, Strength and Conditioning Passion Pursuit, is open 7th-12th grade students.   If students did not sign up for a Passion Pursuit class last year, they will have the opportunity to sign up during the 1st week of school.  We will also be reviewing rosters with our 6th and 7th grade students during the 1st week of school. Students are required to attend every day of the week and arrive on campus at 7:30am. Passion Pursuit classes will begin on Friday, August 16th.

In June and over the last few weeks, we have updated several important back to school documents including the 2019-2020 School Supply List, Uniform Information, Day 1 &  2 Arrival & Dismissal Plan ALA FT19-20 Arrival Dismissal Plan FT (after Day 1 & 2),, Euclid Arrival & Dismissal Plan, YMCA Afterschool  Information, Fox Tech Campus Athletic Overview, and the PK-7th Bus Information

We also want to remind all families that you may sign-up to volunteer by completing the new online  online volunteer registration form. When a need for volunteers arises, you will receive an email detailing the assistance requested.
