Dear Advanced Learning Academy,
Since ALA’s inception, we have been eager to design experiences to further connect our students across our two campuses and take advantage of our unique opportunities as a PK-12 academy, the only one in SAISD. Last week our 8th-12th grade Design Lab and Engineering Design students met with PreK students as part of the Learning Outside the Box Project. They observed how our PreK students learn and listen and and what matters to them. This is the first important step in the design thinking process used at ALA. Our ALA FT students will be designing and creating sensory boards to be installed in the classrooms and hallways at Euclid. HERE are some pictures of the students in action! Another cross campus collaboration will also be starting soon, Big Buddies! Big Buddies is a leadership course offered to 4th and 5th grade students as part of our Flex Friday. Students volunteer to mentor PreK students. When asked why they volunteer to mentor, our older kids say they love Big Buddies because the little kids get so excited to see them, and they love helping them learn and play. The program is entering into its third year and now boasts 58 student mentors. Many thanks to our teachers Alanna Pikla, Klaudia Hidalgo, Jacqueline Castillo, Kat Sauter, Terri Eichholz, and Emily Delgado for implementing these collaborations!
Euclid families, we look forward to seeing you at the first RULER Night of the year this Tuesday, September 24th from 4:30 to 6:00pm. This event is designed for new to ALA families; however, all families are invited to attend in order to learn about RULER, our social-emotional curriculum, and the anchor tools that we use at school. Information will be set up at various stations, allowing families to move through the sessions at different times and paces. Returning families are also welcome to join for a refresher course on these anchor tools. Families may contact Leah Hoffpauir at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Our Euclid campus will be launching clubs in the next few weeks. Please use this form to input your contact information and select your child’s top 3 choices for clubs on the Euclid campus. The deadline for entering club preferences is Sunday, October 6th at 4PM, and all clubs will begin Tuesday, October 15th from 3:45 – 4:45 (unless otherwise noted). Members of each club will be chosen by lottery, and families will be notified of selection for each club via email by club sponsors. You may view descriptions for each club on our campus webpage.
On Thursday, September 26th, we are hosting two community meetings at ALA FT. First, there is a Family and Community Engagement Meeting from 8:30am-9:30am in the ALA FT Library. Along with meeting our new College Bound Advisory and Campus Testing Coordinator, families will hear more about current volunteer opportunities and receive a brief orientation. If you can’t attend, but you are interested in volunteering, please review this Volunteer Handbook and return the agreement on page 12 to the ALA Office. Along with returning the agreement, all volunteers are also required to complete an annual background check. More information can be found HERE. The second event at ALA FT on Thursday is an 11th & 12th Grade Financial Aid Information Night from 6-7pm in the ALA FT cafeteria. Families can expect to learn what your student needs from you in order to fill out their financial aid package for college.
Our 4th/5th grade students continue to sell Paletas this month after school at ALA FT. Look for them in the courtyard of the garden from 3:50- 4:15. Paletas are $1. The proceeds will be used for supplies and materials for their Wonder Courses. Thanks for your support!
Looking ahead, students at ALA at Euclid will have their individual pictures taken on Tuesday, October 8th. This will be a free dress day for our PK-3 students. Families may visit Lifetouch Photography to access a preview of picture packages available using the ALA specific Picture Day ID: 0Q100902YX .
Finally, On Saturday, September 28th, our 6th-12th grade students are invited to the school to work with teachers (6th/7th 9am-1pm and 9th-12th 9am-noon). Contact information for the different grade levels can be found in the detail section of the Saturday School calendar event on the 10th.
Have a wonderful week!
