Community Update: January 5, 2020

Happy New Year!  As a reminder, Monday, January 6th, 2020, is a student holiday as faculty and staff finish preparing for the beginning of the second semester.

Our first large event of 2020 for ALA FT will be Student Led Conferences (SLCs) beginning on Wednesday, January 15th, for all students in 6th-12th grades. Students are selecting work from their most important individual learning experiences and are eager to share and celebrate their learning with their families. Students’ winter MAP data will also be available for the tests that have already been completed by the conference date. We invite families to sign-up for a conference time using the links included in the following reference, along with other important details: 19-20 Student Led Conferences Overview  Report cards for 6th-12th grade students will also be handed out to families during the selected time slot. Our PreK-5th report cards will be sent home at the end of this week. 

The  2020-21 Choice Application window is open now thru January 31st.  Lotteries will be conducted for new to ALA Pre-K, 6th, 9th and 10th grade students. Current ALA students do not need to submit an application to retain a seat for the 2020-2021 school year. The names of prospective kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th grade students (non-lottery grades) may be added to existing waitlists during this application window via the online application as well. If a sibling would like to be considered for sibling priority in the lottery grades (PreK, 6th, 9th and 10th only) an application must be completed online by the deadline and the currently enrolled sibling information must be stated on the application and continue enrollment at ALA for the  2020-2021 school year. Sibling priority does not guarantee admission. On Saturday, January 11th from 10am-2pm, the district is hosting Experience SAISD: Districtwide School Showcase at the Freeman Coliseum Expo Hall.  Be sure to encourage friends and family to stop by the ALA table to learn more about our school and programming! 

On Thursday and Friday,  a group of 8th-12th grade students are electing to to participate in the Model United Nations San Antonio conference after having spent the semester preparing and researching their assigned country. We are excited to send students to the event again this year, and we thank the teacher and sponsor Meghan Harrington for her efforts.

On Thursday evening, January 9th, students and parents participating in the NYC, ALA Goes to Broadway trip, should attend a mandatory meeting at 6:30pm in the theatre regarding their travel.  We are excited to have a group of 30 ALA and CAST students, 2 theatre teachers, and 10 of our parents going on this trip to see To Kill A Mockingbird and Beetlejuice on Broadway, to attend workshops with Broadway actors and designers, tour the Apollo theatre, and many other historic theatre buildings and significant events in our American history.

On Wednesday, January 14th , 2020, at 6pm in the ALA FT cafeteria we are holding an information meeting for current sophomores and juniors about an exciting summer opportunity for 10 ALA students to spend a week in Puebla, Mexico, at the Universidad de las Americas Puebla from July 12th-18th. The program includes Spanish language classes, cultural studies, excursions to historical sites, airfare, and all meals. ALA students and faculty will be traveling with students and faculty from our sister CAST Network schools. Due to our partnership with the CAST Network, our students can participate for a subsidized and reduced price ($100 free/reduced lunch student or $350 non free/reduced lunch student). 

Last semester, Chrissy Leal, ALA Euclid teacher, launched Out & About Family Field Trips, a monthly program to further build connections across the ALA community.  The first Family Field Trip of 2020 will be on Saturday, January 25th at 10:30am to participate in the special guest series at The Twig Bookstore (306 Pearl Parkway, 78215). On the 25th, the Dinosaur from the How Do Dinosaurs Say books will be present. If the weather is nice, families are encouraged to enjoy the Farmer’s Market at The Pearl.
