Dear Advanced Learning Academy Families,
Yesterday, ALA participated in Experience SAISD along with schools from across the district. It was wonderful to listen to current faculty, students, and ALA parents enthusiastically share their experiences and stories about ALA. We look forward to welcoming new ALA students in early March. We will also be hosting an informational session for current 8th grade families in the coming weeks. We will share more details about times and locations as soon as events are finalized.
As a reminder, on Tuesday, January 14th, at 6pm in the ALA FT cafeteria, we are holding an information meeting for current sophomores and juniors about the summer opportunity for 10 ALA students to spend a week in Puebla, Mexico, at the Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP) from July 12th-18th. The program includes Spanish language classes, cultural studies, excursions to historical sites, airfare, and all meals. ALA students and faculty will be traveling with students and faculty from our sister CAST Network schools. Due to our partnership with the CAST Network, our students can participate for a subsidized and reduced price ($100 free/reduced lunch student or $350 non free/reduced lunch student). The date was accidentally listed as Wednesday in last week’s update, but the informational session will be on Tuesday. Representatives from ALA, the CAST Network and UDLAP will all be in attendance.
On Wednesday, 6th-12th grade ALA FT students will be participating in Student Led Conferences (SLCs) from 4:30-6:30pm. Students are selecting work from their most important individual learning experiences and are eager to share and celebrate their learning with their families. Report cards for 6th-12th grade students will also be handed out to families during the selected time slot. A light pizza snack will be provided to student presenters and their families. Our K-3 teachers are excited to launch a school-wide “Night at the Science Museum” PBL this week. Each Village will visit the Witte Museum and the DoSeum on the following dates:
Witte (9:15 am – 11:15 am):
- Village A – 1/15
- Village B – 1/16
- Village C – 1/14
DoSeum (10:00 am – 1:00 pm):
- Village A – 1/23
- Village B – 1/24
- Village C – 1/22
Parent volunteers are needed as chaperones for each field trip. Please let your child’s teacher know if you are able to attend. The cost for chaperones at the Witte is $5. The cost for chaperones at the DoSeum is $10.
Our creative writing and art students at the ALA FT campus are beginning a picture book project and are inviting community members to request a special book for a young person in their lives. Families may express interest by completing this form by Friday, January 17th. Once the total number of requests is known, the teachers, Dan Mallette and Galen McQuillen, will notify families if the request can be fulfilled.
The deadline to apply to UTSA’s Summer Prefreshman Engineering Program (PREP) program for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders is January 31st. PREP identifies middle and high school students interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and helps prepare students for advanced studies and careers in those fields by providing a challenging academic program that emphasizes abstract reasoning and problem solving, and exposes participants to careers through speakers and field trips. On Thursday morning at 5:30am, January 16th, students and parents participating in the NYC, ALA Goes to Broadway trip will head to the San Antonio Airport for their trip to New York! We wish them safe and warm travels. They will be back on Monday, January 20th at 10pm.
Looking ahead, on Monday, January 20th, 2020, ALA will be participating in the upcoming MLK March. Families are invited to join us and the city of San Antonio as we celebrate Dr. King’s legacy of justice, peace, and equality. Bus transportation from ALA Fox Tech to the march will be provided. Interested families should review this flier and fill out the required participant form. We will gather in the ALA FT parking lot at 8:15am and depart at 8:30am.
